The Dodge Honeybee comes up again..

Back in March, I posted about the camper we had when I was a kid. I remade the illustration into a little wall quilt as a Father’s Day gift for my dad.

detail..

I forgot to measure but I think it’s probably 14-16″ on the long side. Lots of fusing, which I’ve only used a little bit before. Mostly fabrics and thread, some ink and a little bit of colored pencil. I managed to do this entire thing without making any major mistakes that had to be fixed! No melted tulle, no mis-fused bits. I’m so happy! Of course the back is a complete wreck but I’m not fussy about what sits against the wall. (The camper itself was drawn mostly from memory – I’m sure there are some pictures at my parents’ house, but I didn’t have any here, and googling only turned up two image results for the exterior, neither of which showed the front end.)

The killer whale was my favorite animal for most of my life. I had lots of stuffed ones and I would arrange all of them – plus stuffed dolphins, penguins, and sea lions – around my one-speaker tape player and listen to my Shamu and Friends tape, pretending they were singing all the songs.

When I was a little bit older, my grandparents ordered a kit from the Orca Adoption Program and let me choose one to adopt for my birthday. I picked a female named Jelly Roll from the L-pod; she was number L-43 and her story said she’d been orphaned as a youngster. I got updates and a newsletter all year. It was awesome.

In my nostalgic googling I came across a news item that says she and two others disappeared in September of 2006 and were presumed dead. The orcas of Puget Sound don’t appear to be thriving and need all the help they can get. As of 2006, the National Marine Fisheries Services added the resident population to the endangered species list.

One year of symbolic adoption is $35. I’m having trouble picking which one I want to adopt..

RED.

Red is not my color. Almost all my clothes are coooooool – blue, green, violet – I’m the ocean, look at me. So I have this dress in a fantastic mod print of all olive and mustard shades, and I was going to a wedding, and I needed some accessories. Red may not be my best all-over shade, but it’s good here!

A small superquick clutch

It fit all the important stuff.

And I decided I should have a big red necklace, so I followed this tutorial and made my own:
